About BrightRoots

A community-based early childhood organization dedicated to ensuring every child has the foundation they need to thrive.

About BrightRoots

BrightRoots is a community-based early childhood organization dedicated to ensuring that every child from birth through age five has the foundation they need to thrive in school and in life. Through evidence-based programs, family engagement, and professional development, we connect the people who matter most in a child's early years -- parents, caregivers, educators, and community partners -- with the knowledge, skills, and support they need to nurture healthy development.

Our Story

BrightRoots was founded in 2001 by Dr. Carolyn Whitfield, a developmental psychologist and mother of three, who recognized a critical gap in her community. While research consistently showed that the first five years of life are the most formative period for brain development, many families in the region had little access to affordable, high-quality early learning programs or the support they needed to promote their children's growth at home.

What started as a small parent education group meeting in the basement of a community center has grown into a comprehensive early childhood organization serving thousands of families each year. Dr. Whitfield's original vision -- that every family, regardless of income or circumstance, should have access to the tools and resources that set children up for success -- remains the guiding principle behind everything BrightRoots does.

In 2005, BrightRoots opened its first dedicated learning center, offering infant and toddler programs alongside parent workshops. By 2010, the organization had expanded to include professional development for early childhood educators, recognizing that workforce quality is inseparable from program quality. In 2015, BrightRoots launched its developmental screening initiative, providing free assessments to more than 500 children in its first year alone. Today, BrightRoots operates out of a purpose-built facility that includes three classrooms, a family resource library, a training center, outdoor learning gardens, and administrative offices.

Mission

To strengthen families and communities by providing accessible, evidence-based programs that support the healthy development of children from birth through age five.

Vision

A community where every child enters school ready to learn, every family feels confident and supported, and every early childhood professional has the tools to make a lasting impact.

Values

Child-Centered: Every decision we make starts with what is best for children. We design programs around the developmental needs and natural curiosity of young learners.

Family First: We honor the central role families play in their children's lives. We partner with parents and caregivers as equals, respecting their knowledge, culture, and aspirations.

Equity and Inclusion: We are committed to serving all families, with a focus on reaching those who face the greatest barriers to accessing quality early learning. We strive to create welcoming, culturally affirming spaces for every person who walks through our doors.

Evidence-Based Practice: Our programs are grounded in the best available research on child development, teaching, and family support. We continuously evaluate our work and adapt based on what the data tells us.

Community Partnership: We believe that no single organization can meet all the needs of children and families. We build strong, collaborative relationships with community partners to create a comprehensive network of support.

Professional Excellence: We invest in the people who work with children every day. We hold ourselves and our team to the highest standards of professional practice, ethical conduct, and continuous learning.
