School Readiness Initiative
A six-week summer program preparing children for a confident start to kindergarten.
School Readiness Initiative
The BrightRoots School Readiness Initiative is a targeted six-week summer program designed to give children entering kindergarten the confidence, skills, and stamina they need to thrive from day one. Running each July and August, this intensive program bridges the gap between early learning and formal schooling, ensuring that every child walks into their new classroom prepared and excited.
Program Overview
Six-Week Intensive
The program runs Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM for six consecutive weeks during July and August. Each day is carefully structured to build academic, social, and self-care skills progressively.
Healthy Lunch Included
Every session includes a nutritious lunch prepared by our registered dietitian. Children practice mealtime independence, including opening containers, using utensils, and cleaning up after themselves.
Transportation Available
Transportation assistance is available for families who need it. We coordinate pickup and drop-off routes to ensure that no child misses the opportunity to participate due to transportation barriers.
Completely Free
The School Readiness Initiative is offered at no cost to families, funded entirely through community donations and grants. All materials, meals, and transportation are included.
What Children Learn
Our curriculum is built around the five domains of kindergarten readiness, ensuring that children develop a well-rounded set of skills.
Academic Foundations
- Letter Recognition: Children learn to identify all 26 uppercase and lowercase letters through songs, games, tactile activities, and interactive read-alouds
- Number Sense: Counting to 20 and beyond, one-to-one correspondence, basic addition concepts using manipulatives, and recognizing written numerals
- Name Writing: Every child practices writing their first name independently by the end of the program
- Early Reading Skills: Phonological awareness activities including rhyming, syllable clapping, and beginning sound identification
Social and Emotional Skills
- Following Directions: Children practice listening to and completing multi-step instructions, a critical skill for classroom success
- Taking Turns and Sharing: Structured group activities and cooperative games teach children how to wait, share materials, and work together
- Self-Regulation: Calm-down strategies, deep breathing exercises, and emotion vocabulary help children manage frustration and big feelings
- Classroom Routines: Children learn to raise their hand, line up, transition between activities, and sit attentively during group time
Self-Care and Independence
- Personal Belongings: Managing a backpack, lunchbox, water bottle, and jacket independently
- Bathroom Independence: Using the restroom independently, washing hands, and managing clothing
- Mealtime Skills: Opening packaged foods, using utensils, and cleaning up after eating
- Building Stamina: Gradually increasing the length of focused activities to prepare for a full school day
