Developmental Milestones

Understanding what to expect at each stage helps you celebrate your child's progress and identify areas where they might benefit from extra support. BrightRoots provides families with milestone guides organized by age range, aligned with nationally recognized standards from the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Key Milestones by Age

Birth to 6 Months: Responds to sounds and voices, begins to smile socially, tracks objects with eyes, lifts head during tummy time, reaches for and grasps toys, babbles and coos.

6 to 12 Months: Sits without support, begins to crawl and pull to stand, says first words like "mama" or "dada," plays peek-a-boo, shows stranger anxiety, feeds self with fingers.

1 to 2 Years: Walks independently, builds towers of two to four blocks, follows simple instructions, uses 10 to 50 words, begins pretend play, shows interest in other children.

2 to 3 Years: Runs and climbs with confidence, speaks in two- to three-word sentences, sorts objects by shape and color, engages in parallel play, shows growing independence in self-care tasks.

3 to 5 Years: Tells stories, counts to ten or beyond, draws recognizable shapes, plays cooperatively with peers, follows multi-step directions, writes some letters, demonstrates empathy and perspective-taking.

BrightRoots offers free developmental screenings on the first Wednesday of every month. If you have concerns about your child's development at any time, our child development specialists are available for consultations.

Tips for Supporting Learning at Home

You do not need expensive toys or a teaching degree to support your child's learning. Some of the most effective strategies involve everyday moments and simple materials you already have at home.

Talk and Listen: Narrate your daily routines, ask open-ended questions, and give your child time to respond. Conversation is the single most powerful tool for building language skills.

Read Together Every Day: Even five to ten minutes of shared reading builds vocabulary, comprehension, and a lifelong love of books. Let your child choose the books and ask questions about the pictures and the story.

Play Together: Follow your child's lead during play. Building with blocks, playing pretend, drawing pictures, and doing puzzles all develop critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

Explore Outside: Nature walks, trips to the park, gardening, and water play offer rich sensory experiences and opportunities for scientific inquiry. Encourage your child to notice, wonder, and ask questions about the world.

Create Routines: Consistent daily routines help young children feel safe and develop self-regulation. Involve your child in tasks like setting the table, sorting laundry, and tidying up to build responsibility and fine motor skills.

Limit and Co-View Screens: For children over two, keep screen time limited and choose high-quality, interactive content. Watch together and talk about what you see to make it a shared learning experience.

Family Success Stories

Hearing from other families can be one of the most encouraging and motivating parts of the BrightRoots experience. Our community of parents regularly shares their journeys, challenges, and celebrations.

The Martinez Family: When Sofia was 18 months old, her parents noticed she was not yet speaking any words. After a developmental screening at BrightRoots, they were connected with a speech-language pathologist and enrolled in the Toddler Explorers program. Within six months, Sofia was using over 30 words and communicating in short phrases. Her mother credits the combination of professional support and the daily strategies she learned in parent workshops for the breakthrough.

The Johnson Family: Marcus and Keisha attended BrightRoots workshops during their first pregnancy and continued through their daughter Ava's enrollment in the Preschool Readiness program. They found the community of other parents invaluable and appreciated having a consistent team of educators who knew their family. Ava entered kindergarten confident, curious, and socially skilled, and Marcus now volunteers as a mentor for new fathers in the program.

The Nguyen Family: After relocating from another state, the Nguyen family found BrightRoots through a referral from their pediatrician. The Infant Discovery program helped them connect with other families in the area while supporting their son Minh's early development. The bilingual resources provided by BrightRoots were especially meaningful as the family navigates raising their children in two languages.
