Volunteer

Share your time and talents by supporting our programs, events, and outreach efforts.

Volunteer With BrightRoots

Volunteers are the heartbeat of BrightRoots. Every year, more than 200 community members share their time, skills, and passion to help young children learn, grow, and discover their potential. Whether you have a few hours a month or a few hours a week, there is a meaningful way for you to get involved. No special experience is needed, just a caring heart and a willingness to show up for kids.

Volunteer Opportunities

Reading Buddies

Be paired one-on-one with a young reader for weekly 45-minute reading sessions. You will share stories, practice literacy skills, and help build a child's confidence and love of books. Reading Buddies meet at libraries, schools, and community centers throughout the region. This is one of our most popular and rewarding volunteer roles.

Workshop Assistants

Help our facilitators run smooth, welcoming Parent Workshops every Saturday morning. Responsibilities include setting up materials, greeting families, assisting with activities, supervising childcare, and cleaning up after sessions. Workshop assistants play a vital role in making every family feel at home.

Event Helpers

BrightRoots hosts community events throughout the year, including family fun days, book drives, seasonal celebrations, and fundraising gatherings. Event helpers assist with setup, registration, activity stations, and logistics. These are great opportunities for groups, students, and anyone looking for flexible, short-term volunteer commitments.

Translators and Interpreters

We serve a diverse community and are always in need of volunteers who can help translate materials or interpret during workshops, enrollment conversations, and community events. If you are fluent in Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Arabic, or another language, your skills can help us reach more families.

Garden and Nature Volunteers

Love the outdoors? Help maintain our community garden, assist with Nature Explorers sessions, lead nature walks, or support seasonal planting and harvest activities. This is a wonderful role for anyone who wants to share their love of nature with young children.

What to Expect

  • Orientation: All new volunteers attend a two-hour orientation session that covers our mission, programs, child safety protocols, and expectations
  • Background check: A background check is required for all volunteers who interact with children. BrightRoots covers the cost
  • Training: Role-specific training is provided before you begin. Reading Buddies receive literacy support training; workshop assistants learn facilitation basics; all volunteers are trained in child interaction best practices
  • Flexible scheduling: We work with your availability. Most roles require a minimum commitment of two hours per week or per event, but we are happy to accommodate a schedule that works for you
  • Support: A staff coordinator is always available to answer questions, provide guidance, and make sure your experience is positive

Who Can Volunteer

We welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. High school and college students seeking service hours, retirees looking to stay active in their community, professionals wanting to give back, and families who want to volunteer together are all encouraged to apply.
