There is something about the first cool breeze of autumn that makes you want to gather with the people you care about. Add in some pumpkins, apple cider, and a whole lot of kid-friendly activities, and you have the recipe for one of our favorite days of the year — the BrightRoots Fall Harvest Festival.
This year's festival, held on a crisp Saturday morning at Riverside Community Park, brought together more than 200 families from across our community. Whether they were current BrightRoots families, alumni, or neighbors discovering our programs for the first time, the energy was warm, joyful, and unmistakably festive.
Pumpkin Painting and Nature Crafts
The craft stations were buzzing from the moment the gates opened. Children of all ages settled in at long tables covered in newspaper to paint pumpkins in every color imaginable. Some went for classic jack-o-lantern faces, while others created elaborate abstract designs that would make any gallery proud.
Nearby, the nature craft table drew crowds of curious young explorers. Using leaves, acorns, pinecones, and twigs collected from the park, children created collages, leaf rubbings, and miniature woodland scenes. These activities were not just fun — they connected children to the natural materials of the season and encouraged creative thinking and fine motor development.
Storytime Under the Oak Tree
One of the most beloved moments of the day was our outdoor storytime, led by educator Emily Thompson. Seated on blankets beneath a sprawling oak tree, families listened to autumn-themed stories about harvest traditions, changing leaves, and the animals that prepare for winter. The children were captivated, and more than a few parents admitted to getting swept up in the magic as well.
After each story, Emily led the group in simple songs and finger plays that reinforced the themes. It was a beautiful reminder of how powerful shared stories can be in building community and sparking imagination.
Live Music and Movement
Local musician and parent volunteer David Park brought his guitar and a repertoire of folk songs that had children dancing, clapping, and singing along. The grassy clearing in front of the stage became an impromptu dance floor, with toddlers spinning in circles and older children inventing their own choreography.
Music and movement are central to early learning, and it was wonderful to see these elements come alive in such an organic, joyful way. Several families told us afterward that the sing-along was the highlight of their day.
Community Connections
Beyond the activities, the festival served as a gathering point for the broader community. Local partners set up information tables, including representatives from the public library, the children's health clinic, and the parks department. Families connected with resources they might not have known about and learned about upcoming programs and events.
For our BrightRoots team, the festival was also a chance to meet families who are considering our programs. We had meaningful conversations with parents who had questions about enrollment, curriculum, and what makes our approach to early learning different. Several families signed up for tours on the spot.
A Volunteer-Powered Event
None of this would have been possible without our incredible volunteers. More than thirty community members gave their time to set up, run activity stations, serve refreshments, and clean up afterward. Their generosity and enthusiasm are the backbone of events like this, and we are deeply grateful.
Looking Ahead
The Fall Harvest Festival is more than a party — it is a reflection of the values that guide everything we do at BrightRoots. Learning happens best in community. Joy is a powerful teacher. And when families come together, everyone benefits.
